Children and pocket money

We have often wondered if we would give pocket money to our children, at what age, how much, how often, what connection would be between their behavior and this money.

We have often wondered if we would give pocket money to our children, at what age, how much, how often, what connection would be between their behavior and this money.
Is pocket money a necessity or reward for the child?
What role do they play in the development of the child?
To answer these questions, let's start by discussing the role of shopping in the child's life. Do we take the child with us to the shops? We teach him as a child to choose certain products, we teach him the money and the prices, we tell him what we allow to buy and what not, which are the objects we need in the house, for personal use, for fun, etc.?
Often we avoid going with the child to shopping, either because we are afraid of getting bored, or because he asks for things we cannot buy, or because we cannot pay attention to the child and to shopping.

However, it is necessary to show him this negligible part of our life, to tell him that we need different objects, to ask his opinion on the purchase of different products, be they food or for himself (clothes, shoes, toys, objects for the room), for the whole family, for holidays or various gifts for loved ones. Shopping plays an important educational role.

Going with the little one, we can learn the value of money, we can encourage certain behaviors (such as cleaning, buying toothpaste, brushes, his favorite soap, etc.), helping him to form the ability to choose between several products that they like, to be able to postpone the purchase of a desired product for a later date, to obtain information about different objects, to communicate with foreign persons (sellers, other buyers).
Going regularly with him to the shops, making shopping lists together, establishing what is needed and what we buy for pleasure, helping him learn the value of things, making "small accounts" about the things he wants and wants. be bought, the child will manage to behave properly in stores and even be helpful. At the same time, he will gain confidence in himself, in his ability to shop, to help.
Of course, with the shopping, with his wishes for different products, he will start collecting money, making plans related to certain toys or gifts that he wants to make to family or friends. This way you will find out how to manage the amounts you have collected or received on different occasions, you will know about the prices of the objects you want.
The first steps towards pocket money are therefore made together with the parents, since the child is small. If all goes well, the child will be able to benefit from a certain amount that will allow him to buy some items for himself.
The amounts available to the child are good to be in line with his ability to manage them. If you wake up with larger amounts, the child will not know what to do with them. So even if he wants a toy or something else, the value of the object should not exceed his ability to raise the respective money.
At 6-7 years, a child can make small purchases provided he can handle up to 20 counts, with the rest and with the seller. So he can go alone to a small store to buy a horn, some candy, a yogurt, a notebook, a bag of snacks.
Going from close to close, we will not get to the situation of being overtaken by the demands of the child, unable to fix a sum of pocket money, to punish him for spending too much or on objects that do not use them. Indeed, the child will become responsible, will differentiate between needs and desires, will seek quality objects and will not be wasteful.
From a psychological point of view, both the reward and the punishment of the child with the help of money is not recommended because he will understand that money is a gift, he will have a duplicitous behavior just to obtain and lose sight of the most important aspect, the practical one - we need money to buy different products.
Money will become something to be proud of, it will put the equal sign between his behavior and the amounts obtained, it will learn for money and everything could degenerate into buying the love and kindness of parents, the friendship of colleagues.
