Artificial intra-vaginal insemination

Artificial intra-vaginal insemination

Pregnancy is generally a happy time for most couples. However, for some couples it can be very difficult to have a child, especially if they are dealing with fertility problems. If you have difficulty conceiving a child, you may be interested in trying different fertility treatments to increase your chances of becoming pregnant.

Intravaginal insemination (IVI) is a type of artificial insemination that is sometimes used to help couples have a baby. IVI is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure, which can often be performed in the comfort of one's own home and at very low costs.

Artificial insemination (AI)

Artificial insemination currently refers to 4 different procedures used to facilitate pregnancy.

These procedures use methods, other than sexual contact, to deposit sperm into the female reproductive tract. The most common type of artificial insemination is IUI or intrauterine insemination, in which processed sperm are placed directly in the womb of the woman.
Other types of artificial insemination:

  • intra-tubular insemination (ITI)
  • intravaginal insemination (IVI)
    Intravaginal Insemination (IVI) Intravaginal insemination (IVI) is a type of artificial insemination that you can use to increase your chances of becoming pregnant. Although it is less common than other types of artificial insemination, IVI is a valuable and very popular treatment procedure among some patients. IVI places sperm directly into your vagina to increase your chances of fertilization. This can be done at the fertility clinic or in the comfort of one's own home.
    Indications for IVI is usually reserved only for couples with specific fertility problems. IVI is typically used, if the woman's partner cannot ejaculate during sexual contact, but the woman is healthy and fertile. The procedure requires that you be able to have regular ovulation, either naturally or with the help of fertility drugs, such as Clomid. If you have difficulty with regular ovulation, IVI is not the best treatment method for you.
    IVI can also be used with:
  • a replacement
  • a donor

    Method of processing: sperm processing

    When performing an IVI it is important to use sperm that have good motility and morphology. The sperm of your partner or those of a donor can be used. Raw or unprocessed sperm may be used in IVI, but this may reduce the chances of getting pregnant if the sperm samples may contain low quality sperm. Using sperm that are processed increases your chances of getting pregnant, because the procedure separates any dead or slow sperm.
    Programming The key to IVI success is the programming of the procedure. Regardless of whether IVI is performed at home or by your doctor, it is mandatory for it to occur approximately at the same time as ovulation. To find out when it is ovulation, urine tests can be performed to check the increase in luteinizing hormone (LH) levels. This increase indicates the onset of ovulation. IVI is generally performed 24 hours after the increase in LH level.

    Intra-vaginal insemination procedures

    There are two methods of IVI:
    Syringe method. The syringe method can be performed at home or in the fertility clinic. Use a sterile needle-free syringe to store sperm inside your vagina. The procedure is as follows:
  • Sperm or prepared sperm samples are aspirated with a steri needle;
  • Any air bubbles inside the syringe are pushed out to prevent air from entering the vagina;
  • While you are lying in a comfortable position, the syringe is easily placed inside the vagina until it reaches the cervix;
  • The semen sample is stored near your cervix.
    Cervical capsule method. The cervical capsule method is generally used at home and involves the use of a cervical capsule to insert sperm samples as close to the cervix as possible. You can get a specially adapted cervical capsule from your doctor. The procedure is as follows:
  • the cervical capsule is filled with a sample of your partner's sperm;
  • after you pack the cervical capsule in half, insert it into the vagina or have your partner do it;
  • the cervical capsule should be left in place for 2 or 3 hours; orgasm sometimes helps the sperm to reach the uterus once the cervical capsule is positioned.

    Effectiveness

    The success rate associated with IVI is not high, because the sperm have to cross the cervix and reach the uterus and then into the uterus. However, in general, IVI is 10% likely to produce a pregnancy at each cycle. If we use prepared sperm or ovulation induction medication, the success rate increases to 30% per treatment cycle. Costs IVI is one of the cheapest artificial insemination procedures. If performed at home, without the use of fertility drugs or sperm donors, the only cost of the procedure includes the price of the syringe or cervical capsule and a sterile sperm storage container. If you decide to do IVI using fertility drugs and sperm donor, the costs of a cycle can increase up to $ 300-400.
